Jewish memory embodied in the mandate of “zakhor”
The Hebrew word for remember — zakhor — is repeated nearly 200 times in the Hebrew Bible, with both Israel and God commanded to remember: the Sabbath, the covenant, the exodus from Egypt, the memory of our missing people.
That the commandment to remember has been central to the survival of the Jews in dispersion (galout) over thousands of years.
Techouva from Galout (Return from diaspora to our Holy land) will bring Gueoula (Redemption)
– Maharal of Prague
(Galout-diaspora and Gueloula-Redemption have the same root)
We are just survivors.
And we must remember Amalek, our ennemies : « Remember (זוכר) what Amalek did to you on your journey, after you left Egypt, Do not forget, זוכר ! » (Dt 25, 17-19)
